Ball Drop: How It Works, Odds and Payouts

Ball Drop in Cashout Arcade: drop a ball through pegs into a bucket. 8 to 16 rows, three risk levels, exact bucket multipliers and the odds of each.

How Ball Drop plays

  1. Pick the rows and the risk.
  2. Drop the ball. It bounces down through the pegs.
  3. The bucket it lands in sets your multiplier.

The rule people miss: The edge buckets pay the most and the middle pays the least. Higher risk makes the edges pay more.

Ball Drop is an instant game: you pick the number of rows and a risk level, drop a ball, and it bounces down a pegboard into one of the buckets at the bottom. The bucket it lands in sets your multiplier. There is nothing to time or aim, and the result is decided on our servers before the ball moves.

Coins are virtual with no cash value. Ball Drop is the name we use for this style of game in Cashout Arcade.

How a round works

  1. Choose the rows (8, 10, 12, 14 or 16) and the risk (Low, Medium or High).
  2. Drop the ball. At every peg it goes left or right with equal chance.
  3. The bucket it lands in sets the multiplier, and your bet is paid at that multiplier.

A board with n rows has n + 1 buckets. The number of right turns the ball makes picks the bucket, so the middle buckets are far more likely than the edges.

The bucket odds

The chance of bucket k on an n-row board is the number of ways to make k right turns out of n, divided by 2^n.

Modes and risk: the payout tables

The risk level only changes how the multipliers are shaped across the buckets. Each table is scaled so the average return is 97%.

16 rows: the edge buckets pay 9.11x (Low), 43.21x (Medium) and 119.19x (High). The centre bucket pays 0.76x, 0.26x and 0.02x. 119.19x is the biggest Ball Drop payout, reached in a corner bucket with 16 rows at High risk.

These figures are read directly from the game engine. Notice that most outcomes at High risk are a heavy loss: on 8 rows at High, the three middle buckets together are hit 71.1% of the time and pay 0.05x at most.

A worked example

You drop a 100-coin ball on 12 rows at High risk. The edge buckets pay 64.43x and each is hit with probability 1/4096. Either edge together is 1 in 2,048, so the average from the two edges is 2 x 64.43 / 4096 = 0.031 of your bet. The rest of the 97% comes from the shoulders: the 28.37x buckets (each 12 in 4,096), the 10.40x buckets (each 66 in 4,096) and so on. The middle bucket, hit 22.56% of the time, pays about 0.01x, a loss of roughly 99 coins. High risk means that most drops lose almost everything, and a few win a lot.

Max win and caps

The biggest Ball Drop payout is 119.19x the bet, far below the game-wide limits of 50,000x and 250,000,000 coins per round. Row counts and risk levels are listed as part of the game's published odds on the odds page.

What is the same as other Ball Drop games

Ring Toss: How It Works, Odds and Payouts and Roll Ball: How It Works, Odds and Payouts are carnival re-skins of this board: Ring Toss uses a 14-row board with 15 bottles and Roll Ball a 10-row board with 11 pockets, so their odds are the same binomial buckets. Coin Pusher: how it plays, odds and payouts looks similar on screen but now runs its own five-push rules. The family overview, How Ball Drop Games Work: Pins, Buckets and Risk, explains why the shape of the board is always a bell curve.

Tips that hold up

  • Rows and risk are tastes, not tactics. They change how swingy rounds feel; they do not change the 97%.
  • There is no hot bucket. Every drop is independent. A ball landing on an edge twice does not make a third more or less likely.
  • Low risk at 8 rows is the calmest setting. Its centre pays 0.55x and its edge 6.61x, so results stay close to your bet.
  • High risk at 16 rows is the opposite. About 79% of drops return 0.25x or less.

Frequently asked questions

Which risk level should I pick?

It does not change the average. Every risk level and row count returns 97%. Low risk keeps most buckets close to 1x; high risk pays almost nothing in the middle and a lot at the edges.

Are the edge buckets really that rare?

Yes. With 16 rows, each corner bucket is hit 1 time in 65,536. With 8 rows it is 1 in 256.

Does more rows mean better odds?

No. More rows spreads the ball further, so the middle gets more crowded and the corners rarer and bigger. The return stays 97%.

Can I steer the ball?

No. Every peg sends the ball left or right with equal chance, decided on our servers.
