Multiplier (definition and payout examples)

A multiplier is the number your stake is multiplied by to give the payout. See how it is priced from probability in Dice, and why wins can pay under 1x.

On this page

A multiplier is the number your wager is multiplied by to give the payout. A 2.5x multiplier on a 100-coin bet returns 250 coins. In most Cashout Arcade games the multiplier includes your stake, so 2.5x means 250 coins back and a net gain of 150.

Where the number comes from

A multiplier is a price set by the chance of winning. A fair price is 1 divided by the probability. Cashout Arcade multiplies by 0.97 instead, which builds in the 3 percent house edge: the multiplier is 0.97 divided by the probability, rounded down at the fourth decimal.

In Dice you choose the win chance yourself, so you can see the pricing directly:

A winning bet that returns less than you staked

The last row is worth pausing on. At a 98 percent chance the multiplier is below 1x, so a "win" returns 98.97 coins for a 100-coin bet. You win 98 rounds in 100 and still lose coins on average. A multiplier above 1x is what makes a round a net gain, and for very safe bets the house edge is larger than the margin.

Several kinds of multiplier

  • Payout multipliers are the numbers in the table above: the whole return divided by the stake.
  • Ladder multipliers grow as you survive each step in a cash-out game. After a correct call in Coin Flip the multiplier doubles to 1.94x, 3.88x, 7.76x and so on, because each call is a 50 percent chance. See Cash out (cash-out game term).
  • Feature multipliers change a win inside a game. In Sun Temple a Sun Disc wild carries 2x, 3x or 5x and multiplies the line's pay. See Wild symbol (slot definition).

Limits

Cashout Arcade caps any single round at 50,000 times the bet, and at 250,000,000 coins. That is a ceiling, not a prize: most games top out far lower, and each game's biggest win is on the Odds page.

Common misconceptions

  • "A bigger multiplier is a better deal." Bigger multipliers are less likely. At the same RTP the average is unchanged.
  • "Multipliers raise the RTP." They are priced into it.
  • "Multiplier and odds mean the same." The multiplier is what you are paid; the odds are how likely it is.

Coins are virtual and have no cash value. See How cash-out games work for a longer example.
