Shell Game: How It Works, Odds and Payouts

Shell Game in Cashout Arcade is a game of skill: follow the ball and tap the right cup. Payouts for 3, 4 and 5 cups and what a pure guesser returns.

How Shell Game plays

  1. Set your bet.
  2. Tap to play. The result is decided the moment you play.
  3. The animation is the reveal. You win your bet times the multiplier shown.

The rule people miss: 0x means no win. Anything above 0x pays your bet times that number.

Shell Game is the classic cups-and-ball trick turned into a game of skill. You see which cup the ball starts under, the cups shuffle, and you tap the cup you think hides it. Unlike most games in Cashout Arcade, how well you follow the swaps decides how much you get back.

Coins are virtual and have no cash value. This is the one game that does not return 97% by default: it is priced so that a player who only guesses gets 90%, and a player who tracks the ball does better.

How a round works

  1. Choose 3, 4 or 5 cups and set your bet.
  2. The ball is shown under one cup, then covered.
  3. The cups swap places in a shuffle that speeds up as it goes.
  4. Tap the cup that you think hides the ball. Each round takes one tap.
  5. A right pick pays your bet times the multiplier. A wrong pick loses the bet.

The server draws the ball's starting cup and every swap before the shuffle begins, and checks your tap against where the ball really ended up.

Payouts by cup count

32.7x33.3%90%35.9%
43.6x25.0%90%26.9%
54.5x20.0%90%21.6%

Every pay is 0.9 times the number of cups, so a guesser gets back exactly 90 coins per 100 staked whichever cup count they choose. That is a 10% house edge, deliberately larger than the 3% elsewhere, because the game lets skill lower it. If you follow the ball perfectly, you win every time; the shuffle is built to make that hard.

The shuffle

CupsSwaps in the shuffle
314
416
518

The first swap takes about 420 milliseconds, slow enough to read, and each later swap is faster until the last, which takes about 150 milliseconds. Two in three swaps are between neighbouring cups, and no swap ever repeats the previous pair, because that would just undo it. The swaps are all drawn from the server's random numbers, so there is no pattern in them to learn.

A worked example

You play 4 cups with a 100-coin bet. A correct tap pays 3.6x, or 360 coins. If you guess blindly you win 1 round in 4, and over 100 rounds you stake 10,000 coins and get back about 25 x 360 = 9,000. To return 97%, you would need to win about 26.9 rounds in 100 (9,700 / 360). To break even, you need about 27.8. A tracker who wins 30 rounds in 100 gets back 30 x 360 = 10,800 coins on 10,000 staked, a 108% return. A player who followed every swap perfectly would win every round; the speed of the shuffle is what makes that hard.

Max win and caps

The biggest Shell Game payout is 4.5x with 5 cups. It is far below the game-wide limits of 50,000x and 250,000,000 coins per round. The method the game uses is written out on the odds page.

Is it fair?

Yes, in the sense that matters. Where the ball starts and how the cups swap are drawn on the server, not decided by your tap, and the payout is a fixed multiplier you can see before you play. The animation you watch is the real shuffle, so the ball really is under the cup the server says it is. Winning depends on your attention, not on a hidden rule. See Skill vs Chance in Arcade and Casino-Style Games for how skill and chance are labelled across the games.

What is the same as other games

Shell Game is a hand game with one decision, like the pick in Water Race: How It Works, Odds and Payouts, but where Water Race is pure chance, Shell Game rewards attention. Blackjack: How It Works, Odds and Payouts and Video Poker (Jacks or Better): Odds and Payouts are the other games where your choices change your return.

Tips that hold up

  • Watch the ball, not the cups. Follow the one cup that hides it from the moment it is covered.
  • Fewer cups are easier, but they pay less. 3 cups pay 2.7x; 5 cups pay 4.5x but give you more swaps to follow.
  • Do not guess when you lose track. Pure guessing returns 90%, so your skill is the only thing that lifts that.
  • Tired players lose track first. If you are making mistakes, it is a good time to stop.

Play with limits

A skill game can feel like a game you can master, which makes it easy to keep trying. Set a limit before you start and see Play Safely in Cashout Arcade: Limits and Breaks for tools. Cashout Arcade is for adults aged 18+, uses virtual coins and has no real-money prizes.

Frequently asked questions

What do the cup counts pay?

3 cups pay 2.7x, 4 cups pay 3.6x and 5 cups pay 4.5x for a correct pick.

How good do I have to be to beat a guesser?

Can I win real money?
