Wild symbol (slot definition)
A wild symbol substitutes for other symbols to complete a win. See how Sun Temple's Sun Disc wild and its 2x, 3x and 5x multipliers pay.
On this page
A wild is a slot symbol that substitutes for other symbols to complete a winning line. If a line shows Ankh, Ankh, wild, the wild counts as a third Ankh and the line pays as three of a kind. Most wilds do not replace the scatter symbol, which pays and triggers features in its own way.
The Sun Disc in Sun Temple
Cashout Arcade's Sun Temple has a wild called the Sun Disc. Its rules are published on the odds page:
- It appears on reels 2, 3 and 4 only.
- It replaces every symbol except the Temple Door scatter.
- Each Sun Disc carries a multiplier: 2x (60 percent of the time), 3x (30 percent) or 5x (10 percent).
- If several Sun Discs are in a winning line, their multipliers add together and then multiply that line's pay.
On average one Sun Disc carries 2.6x: 0.6 x 2 + 0.3 x 3 + 0.1 x 5 = 2.6.
Worked example
A line shows Ankh, Ankh and a Sun Disc carrying 3x. The Sun Disc completes three Ankhs, which pay 2.0474x your bet. The disc's multiplier then applies:
2.0474 x 3 = 6.1422x your bet.
With two discs on the same line carrying 2x and 5x, the multipliers add to 7x. Three Ankhs would then pay 2.0474 x 7 = 14.3318x. A wild can turn a modest line into a large one, but the game is priced for it: the chance of the discs appearing is built into the 97 percent return.
Types of wild you will see elsewhere
| Type | What it does |
|---|---|
| Basic wild | Substitutes only |
| Multiplier wild | Substitutes and multiplies the win, like the Sun Disc |
| Expanding wild | Grows to fill its whole reel |
| Sticky wild | Stays in place for several spins |
Common misconceptions
- "A wild makes the game easier to win." The paytable and symbol weights are balanced with wilds included. They add exciting wins, not a better return.
- "More wilds on the reels means better odds." A game with generous wilds pays correspondingly less on the other symbols.
- "A wild is due after a dry spell." Reels are drawn independently each spin. See Independent events (definition and examples).
