Social Casino vs Sweepstakes Casino: What Is the Difference?

Sweepstakes casinos add a second currency redeemable for prizes; social casinos like Cashout Arcade have no redeemable prize at all. The differences.

On this page

A sweepstakes casino looks like a social casino but adds a second kind of currency that can be redeemed for real prizes, usually cash. A true social casino, which is what Cashout Arcade is, has no such currency: coins cannot be redeemed, withdrawn or exchanged for anything of value. That one feature changes the legal footing, the risks and the regulation.

How the sweepstakes model works

Sweepstakes laws allow prize promotions where nobody has to pay to enter. A sweepstakes casino tries to fit casino play into that: you buy a coin pack, and the pack comes with a bonus amount of a second currency "for free". The second currency is the one that can be redeemed. The site then points to a free method of entry (often a postal request) to say that no purchase is necessary.

The effect for a player is that real money goes in, play looks like casino gambling, and money can come out. That is why many regulators and lawmakers treat these sites as gambling rather than as a promotion.

Why legality is changing

In California, AB 831 ("Gambling: operation of a contest or sweepstakes") was signed in October 2025 and took effect on 1 January 2026. As summarised by one law firm, it bans online sweepstakes games that use a dual-currency system, simulate casino-style gambling and award cash or cash equivalents, applies to operators and to businesses that knowingly support them (such as payment processors and content suppliers), and carries criminal penalties. The summary says it exempts occasional promotional sweepstakes run by businesses as a marketing tool. We have not read the statute itself, so check the bill text before relying on this. Other states have also moved to restrict the model, and the lists change often, so we do not give a count or a list. If you want the current position where you live, use your state attorney general or gaming regulator, or a maintained legal tracker.

The point for readers is practical: an app that says "redeem" or "prizes" is in a different legal category from a social casino, and the rules that apply to it can change.

How platforms treat them differently

On 28 October 2025 Google updated its advertising policy to say that sweepstakes casinos are an example of games that do not qualify for certification as social casino games, and that games with real-world rewards fall under the online gambling policy instead. That is an advertising policy, not law, but it shows that the industry treats the two as separate categories.

What Cashout Arcade is

Cashout Arcade is a social casino: one currency, no redemption. Our Terms of Use say coins have no monetary value and cannot be withdrawn, redeemed for cash or prizes, sold, exchanged, or transferred to other players. We run no prize draws and no sweepstakes, we do not use the word "redeem" for coins, and we do not use "cash out" to mean money. In the games, "Cash out" is a mechanic: it locks in the multiplier you have built before the round ends. See How cash-out games work.

Questions to ask any app

  1. Is there more than one currency, and can any of them be redeemed?
  2. What do the terms say about prizes, and where do the prizes come from?
  3. Does the app ask you to pay (or give card details) to receive a prize? The FTC says that if you have to pay to get a prize, it is a scam, and that fees described as taxes or processing charges are a common version.
  4. Is the age limit 18+ or higher, and where is the app not available?
  5. Are the odds published?
  6. What spending limits and breaks does the app give you?

If the answers to the first two are "yes" you are looking at a sweepstakes or real-money product, and the rules and risks in Social Casino vs Real Money Casino: Key Differences apply. For the "can I win real money" question see Can You Win Real Money on Social Casino Apps?.
