Simulated gambling (Apple's definition)
Simulated gambling is betting with no real or exchangeable money. How Apple defines it, how it sets age ratings and what it means for social casinos.
On this page
Simulated gambling is Apple's term for betting or wagering without using real money, or in-game currency that can be exchanged for real money. Social casino games such as virtual slots and card games fall into this category, and it affects the age rating an app receives on the App Store.
Apple's two definitions
Under its "Chance-Based Activities" category, Apple distinguishes:
| Term | Apple's definition (paraphrased) |
|---|---|
| Gambling | Betting or wagering with real money or in-game currency that can be exchanged for real money, such as casino or card games, sports betting or lotteries |
| Simulated gambling | Betting or wagering without real money or in-game currency that can be exchanged for real money |
The difference is whether the currency has a way out. In Cashout Arcade, coins cannot be exchanged for money or prizes, so the games are simulated gambling rather than gambling in Apple's sense.
How it sets the age rating
Developers tell Apple how often each descriptor appears in the app, and Apple generates the age rating. According to Apple's published values, infrequent simulated gambling gives a 13+ rating, while frequent simulated gambling, or any gambling, gives 18+. Some regions differ: in Australia infrequent simulated gambling is rated R 18+, and in South Korea apps with frequent or intense simulated gambling need a Rating Classification Number to be available.
For an app whose main content is casino-style games, simulated gambling is frequent, which points to an 18+ rating. Cashout Arcade is intended for adults aged 18 and over.
Why it matters to a player
The category tells you the content is designed to look and feel like gambling even without money at stake. Practice with simulated gambling does not predict results in real-money gambling, since the stakes, odds and rules can differ. If you notice the games pulling more time or money than you intended, that is worth taking seriously even though the coins are virtual. Apple's parental controls and Screen Time can limit purchases and access.
Common misconceptions
- "Simulated means harmless." Rating bodies treat the content as mature for a reason.
- "Simulated gambling is the same as gambling in law." Apple's definition is a content rule for ratings, not a legal test; laws vary by place.
- "The age rating is advice for children only." It also tells adults what the app contains.
