Self-exclusion (gambling definition)

Self-exclusion is a request to be barred from gambling services for a set time. How it works, what it can and cannot do, and how it differs from a break.

On this page

Self-exclusion is a formal request, made by the person themselves, to be barred from a gambling service for a set period. The operator or a scheme then enforces the ban by closing accounts, blocking sign-up and stopping marketing. Because you set it up in a calm moment, it protects you from a decision you may make in a weak one.

How it works

Schemes differ by country and by operator, but most share three features:

  1. You choose a period. Common options run from months to years, and you cannot normally shorten it once it begins.
  2. It covers a defined set of services. One operator's exclusion applies only to that operator. A national or multi-operator scheme covers every licensed operator that takes part. In Great Britain, for example, GAMSTOP is a free service that blocks access to accounts on gambling websites and apps.
  3. Ending it takes a deliberate step. After the period you usually have to ask, and there may be a cooling-off wait before access returns.

What it can and cannot do

It canIt cannot
Close accounts and block new ones at participating operatorsRemove the urge to gamble
Stop marketing messages from themBlock operators outside the scheme or unlicensed sites
Put a barrier between an urge and accessReplace treatment, support or help with debt

It works best alongside other steps, such as Gambling Blockers: Gamban, BetBlocker and Bank Blocks, handing control of money to someone you trust, and support from a counsellor or group.

Self-exclusion versus a break

A short break, such as a Cooling-off period (gambling definition), is easy to end. Self-exclusion is built to be hard to reverse. Choose a break to pause; choose self-exclusion when you want a firm barrier.

Common misconceptions

  • "Self-exclusion means I have failed." It is a tool many people use deliberately.
  • "One signup covers everything." Check which services a scheme includes.
  • "I can undo it if I change my mind next week." The delay is the point.
